purism welcomes romanian minimal house upstart mihai popescu to the table, following the promising producer s run of hotly tipped singles on his own soulsity label. the groove is crisp and infectious on opening cut -do watcha feeel,- which makes great use of a looped up melodic phrase and choice vocal snippets for a quintessential house throwdown. -mixed moods- is no less floor-ready, but its delicate, shimmering keys add a seductive quality that s impossible to resist. -midnight insp- takes a heads-down, tracky approach on its run in, but by the latter half opens up to reveal a gorgeous, swirling bath of chords. -aritmethixx- provides contrast for the ep s closer, keeping the beat stripped back and using haunting flecks of sonic decoration that wouldn t sound out of place on a horror inc track

new zealander julien dyne is a multi-instrumentalist with a long and impressive history of collaborative, live and solo musicianship. best known for his solo work on bbe and having worked with the likes of theo parrish, steve spacek, andreya triana and lord echo - one of soundway’s most successful artists. dyne has also accumulated a number of accolades over the course of a 10-year career including but not exclusive to being hotly tipped by both moodymann and gilles peterson.
dyne’s new project for 2018 is an 11-track lp on miles cleret’s extolled soundway label. demonstrating a shift in gears and movement toward a more uptempo, afro inspired sound ‘teal’ melds instrumental flair with astute production and a persistent grain of impassioned, effortless soul. the album features fellow new zealanders lord echo and mara tk, long term band-mate ladi6, fat freddy’s drop trumpeter toby laing, plus australian vocalist tim guy and jazz luminaries jonathan crayford and john bell. this is a body of work for the listener and the dancer alike with a mood as fitting for headphones as it is for the floor, with the double vinyl album cut loud at 45 rpm.

7 inch singles were instrumental to the development of the jamaican music industry, more affordable than full lengths for the consumer, they also allowed the labels to turnaround what was being recorded into music played from their booming sound systems as quickly as possible. in that spirit, get on down will be reissuing some of the most crucial jamaican sides on 45, staring with the maytals “monkey man.” recorded in 1969, the cut was a smash hit in jamaica and hit number 47 when released in the uk in early 1970. “monkey man” went on to be highly influential on the british two-tone movement of the later 70s with the specials offering up a ripping version of the cut on their 1979 debut. the b side, “night and day”, though not a chart-burner, is certainly one of the most solid rock-steady cuts you’ll ever encounter rife with bubbly keys, tight snares and toots hibbert’s incredibly soulful vocals.

phonogramme, the house subdivision of parent label and integral parisian record shop syncrophone dedicates itself directly to the french music scene, with previous releases from the likes of professor inc, john jastszebski, aleqs notal and a handful of other local heads. phonogramme continues to keep things close-to-home through the labels next edition presented by gibs, who s most notably known for works on his own imprint, an.art records – a family run label with music shared by himself and his two brothers. find an oasis kicks off the release with rolling organic percussion before progressing elegantly into layered emotive lead synths and mellow bass stabs. jarkarta is a subdued deeper house cut, filled with an uplifting, undulating melody and raw lo-fi elements collectively creating a luscious calming effect. last up, der germain offers up a fluid, groove filled number balanced with charming, jazzy flutters and tender keys providing a warm, breezy atmosphere to the end the release.

berlin based techno titan frank muller adopts his beroshima alias for a new four track ep that is already been hailed by the likes of marcel dettman and laurent garnier. first emerging in the nineties, muller has since become a techno great who has played from asia to south america and beyond. he’s had plenty of underground hits on the likes of cocoon and soma, and held some key residencies over the years. always one to command your attention with his multi layered grooves, this ep features an old juan atkins sample “buy some shit from detroit” that has been part of beroshima’s live sets for years. excellent opener ‘encounter’ reflects a recent idea jeff mills and muller had to produce tracks together for a not yet produced sci-fi movie. it is an eight-minute astral techno trip with smooth, driving drums and plenty of intergalactic synth lines. ‘the passion of lovers’ transfers the organic beroshima style into 2018 and shows off frank’s passion for spaced out electronica. it’s a brilliantly bumping cut with lithe synths and melodies adding that soul and colour as it races through the galaxies. the iconic ‘buy some’ with the atkins sample then surges into the future with icy hi hats dancing over rubbery drums. the warped synths take the lead and bring a real sense of off kilter energy to this most timeless bit of techno. last of all is the fantastic space mix of ‘encounter’ which is dreamy and cinematic with exquisite keys and pads colouring in a huge night sky as the drums drive things along. this is an archetypal techno ep filled with cosmic colours and serene emotions.

motorcity wine recordings returns in fine style with its second ep featuring a swashbuckling blend of house and jazz sounds from detroiters and their compatriots. rising live techno star haz mat leads this 12” with a house-tinged boogie funk cover of blue six’s “music & wine”, complete with vocoder and massive drums. kuumba reunion band slides through next with the afro-jazz number “3 fingered fist (jabbar)”, a cut loaded with hand drums and chunky saxophone solos for the jazzdancers and listeners alike. motorcity wine guest and london native aroop roy kicks off the flip with a dubbed out beatdown house joint, a brilliant midtempo track perfect for the dread moments of the night. last but certainly not least, the hughes/smith quintet finish the release with an uptempo jazz-funk piece, with generous amounts of fender rhodes and call-and-response melodies. only 500 vinyl pressed enjoy the soulful sounds of detroit.

dutch duo deep dimension debut on rekids with a stomping vocal cut entitled ‘so 1992’ featuring a collaborative remix from label founder radio slave and rising star p.leone. jeffrey hek & jimmy van de geijn have been actively djing for over two decades. the pair paired up as deep dimension in 2015, combining their talents to form a signature techno sound comprised of deep basslines and powerful kicks. launched earlier this year, their vinyl label named gen x has instantly picked up overwhelming support from the likes of radio slave, tommy four seven, benny rodriguez, kobosil, and many more. they now continue their upward trajectory by arriving on matt edwards’ respected berlin based imprint, rekids. thudding kicks are joined by rising synths as pitched up vocals come into play in ‘so 1992’– the result is a rave inspired techno monster designed to throw crowds into frenzy. on the flip, radio slave pairs up with rekids regular p.leone for a cavernous reimagining complete with rolling percussion, off-beat hats and eerie atmospherics.

divine situation are, greg belson is a veteran dj and one of the premiere collectors of soul music worldwide. he s known as the go to authoritarian for gospel soul music, is the compiler of the divine disco series on cultures of soul and presents his radio broadcast divine chord gospel show on la s dublab.com creative hub. and paulo fulci is a dj and producer out of bristol uk. his work as part of the situation edit crew has been released and supported as part of the underground for many years….he now spends his days slangin records, whilst honing his disco scalpel skills in the late twilight hours. following on from their incendiary slab of two sided gospel goodness born again & soul revival , the divine situation duo have crafted the next lot of bangin spiritualized dancefloor destroyers for your record box. here we have an ep catering for several sides to your night. the lead off cut is the flat out roof raiser the problem solver …..then it s boogified territory with brand new feelin , before they close out with the end of nighter, try love . once again, moton bringin the heavyweight platters that matter!

brand new detroit duo man vs indian man comprises ian finkelstein (of scott grooves’s overdubs fame) and even haywood. complementing each other’s strengths, the pair make the perfect match as they pour out thick viscously barbed future soul in thick gooey doses, both “ice accountant” and “cloud nine” are wrapped in foggy layers of sleepy textures as the falsetto vocals and lean instrumentation cut through with dreamy delight. remixes from the legendary egyptian lover (cosmic electro), fellow detroitian pontchartrain (filtered disco house) and brazilian table daddy (lolloping dream tech).

a memorably bracing, momentarily pummeling highlight of ‘song for alpha’, daniel avery perfectly bridges the light and dark contrast of his influences on standout cut, ‘diminuendo’. uncompromising tech-noid drums establish genuine frenzy, matched by a pulsating industrial drone, ultimately collapsing into ethereal feedback, before one final round of frenetic rhythm.

approaching complexity is tangent’s sophomore album release for n5md, a label that has seen accomplished releases from the likes of near the parenthesis, bvdub, and loess among others. throughout its nine offerings, the record features a gorgeous contemplative piano that hangs in the air amidst static clicks and dense atmospheres. its delicate touch feels both melancholic and stirring, as exemplified on tracks “equilibrium i (ii & ii)” and “awaken.” the latter cut is a fascinating work comprised of nearly inaudible whisper-song vocals and swelling ambience, its waves a thick froth of a toppled surf underneath tickled ivory. like the rise and fall of a heavy chest, this sound leads to the track’s conclusion, an elongated departure of breath.
a similar ending can be heard on the track “redundancy” which is complemented by the official video premiering at igloo magazine. jittering frames of concrete grass animations are edited to the rhythmic snippy percussion. this is juxtaposed by images of ice cascading off a rocket launch in slow motion and vapor in reverse. see below.
at almost an hour in length tangent’s new album is their most complete sonically, never straying from its core essence. a quality release that in its nature is both bound to existence and is otherworldly in its simplistic beauty.

livity sound continues to be one of the most innovative labels of its era with another essential release, this time in the form of a debut long player from forest drive west. this extended 2 x 12” and digital release, apparitions lands in october 2018 and is a fascinating further development of the producer s intricate fusions of techno, dub and jungle. * the acclaimed uk artist has released two eps on the label before now, as well as on its sister label dnuos ytivil and the likes of hidden hawaii, appian sound, and london drum & bass outlet rupture. little is known about the london based producer but in just a couple of years he has established his own unique blend of complex rhythms and tactile sound design, distilling a rich history of uk musical influences into fresh new forms. * this record continues in that tradition with a mix of sparse rhythm tracks that contrast heavy weight drum programming with rich and deft sound design. from menacing and mysterious, to cinematic and hypnotic, it makes for a compelling and immersive experience. apparitions is a landmark release for one of the uk s most exciting new producers.

with the release of this ep ,influential parisian producer d’julz establishes the launch of new label jv in collaboration with highly esteemed french yoyaku team. jv is set to evolve with d’julz showcasing his own productions while bringing in masterful talents to collaborate, and with the music policy being very much open, it’s guaranteed to be a consummate source of electronic music. this two-tracker ep kicks off with ‘chaplin bong’, a euphonic groove-packed house cut that is sheer liquid perfection evolving with a combination of dubby techno stabs penetrating a rolling disco bassline. ’j’y vais’, which translates to “i go”, is a deep and bass-heavy old school track that’s hewn from chicago influences. apropulsive, sheen-polished dancefloor gripper.

flevans returns with a killer 45 for the funky dancefloor! leading the way is “who’s got me” - an up tempo disco/boogie cut with more slap bass than a clone army of larry grahams… it’s a tasty dancefloor number with a big top line from none other than laura vane (mj cole, gnarls barkley, laura vane and the vipertones) who absolutely owns the vocal duties as anyone who is familiar with her work would expect. oooh weee!
over on the other side we have more classic-sounding flevans material with the party starting funk breaks of “take your money”. his signature jazzy keyboard and guitar licks converse with cheeky vocal samples all flying in and out of this slick production in a delightful fashion. it’s all about the beats on this one – it’s a guaranteed foot mover!

austin hip-hop beatrepreneur the deli made serious waves with previous cold busted album vibes 3, featuring the song “flowers.” this track shook up the spotify world with over 14 million plays and inclusion on at least 500 playlists. anticipation is strong for a follow-up from the deli and, with his new album jazz cat, he delivers with gusto. filled with the smoked-out, laid-back cut-and-paste rhythmology that the deli is known for, jazz cat contains 15 enticing beat compositions. the title cut shows where he’s at, transmitting an old-is-new-again feel through scratchy snare snaps, looping piano chords, and faraway — both in time and place — city sounds. other highlights include the dreamy lounge pressure of “virgo flip,” “fractals” and its shimmering vibraphone atmospheres co-produced by lungfulls, the ‘hip-hop party happening down the street’ vibe of “spring,” and the crucial, jazzy beat construction of “going home.” dig in ... with jazz cat, the deli trips the night fantastic.

dark entries are honored to reissue the 3rd full length from carolyn fok / cyrnai, an asian-american female solo artist from the bay area. originally self-released in 1988, this reissue adds 3 unreleased bonus tracks recorded during the same period. each copy includes a double sided insert with lyrics, photos and notes by carolyn. all songs have been remastered by george horn at fantasy studios.

33 years after it s first release rick clarke s street soul simmerdown on local records, love with a stranger gets a much welcomed official reissue, remastered from the original tapes. check the dub! just peep that og artwork to get a taste of how this one s about to go down. written and produced by john collins, known for producing the specials - ghost town , love with a stranger perfectly encapsulates that 80s street soul sound. distinctly soulful, synthy slow jams, heavy on the bass with a touch of the low-slung, lovers rock vibrations about them. rick clarke s sultry sweet nothings weave their way irresistibly through this five minute gem, but for those that want to provide their own rendition over the top, the dub has been affectionately cut to the flip.

hilltown disco are back with another attention-grabbing release. the a-side sees the return of the duo who can do-no-wrong, crossmods with an electro-masterclass that takes you on an out-of-this-world journey, followed by a clean-cut, snappy remix of the crossmods track by the belgium act, datawave. flip-over the record and we have acid-genius chris moss acid contributing a re-mastered version of his beautifully-chaotic acidic-banger, the mossquito. continuing the acid theme, dundee producer ansata gives us a real 303 work-out that is guaranteed to fill any dance floor. last but not least, crossover network join the hilltown disco family with a high energy, banger with an iconic old-school electro vocal though out to complete the release.

amish boy aka sküge (not to be confused with skudge) is hugues croibien, a thirty seven year old belgian who has experimented with electronic music since his teens. with a diet of seal phüric, the prodigy, autechre and unit moebius stoking his primordial fire, croibien began to align with the rage that exists in the breakcore genre. already an addict of reggae and dub at this time, croibien decided to create some cut-up raggacore with his brand new ableton live 3 software. meanwhile with friends, croibien created break n brol, a non-lucrative association which tried to promote alternative electronic music in liège where he lived. they premiered some bassline stars kanji kinetic and -squire of gothos- on the belgian scene, alongside other alternative electronic composers and musicians like subjex, ebola, mustard gunn and herrmutt lobby. the fellowship decided to create a free net label to release compilations with the bnb party artists. the rough style techno resurgence over the last few years has precipitated a metamorphosis, sküge became amish boy more glitchy than techno, more offbeat than acid and more ambivalent than industrial. although heavily invested for two decades now, laika test project on power vacuum will be croibiens first vinyl release, with a follow-up already in the pipeline.

tribal pulse is 5 years old, and we re celebrating with a special series of vinyl and compilation releases, and parties in some really insane locations, including a unique birthday celebration in the beautiful highlands of scotland. first up we have boom merchant s i see the future available on 180g vinyl and containing contributions from italian slammin techno kingpin johnny kaos and maltese 303 sniper acidulant. the title track is a morphing, energetic futurist techno cut. a powerful, bass-driven groove works alongside complex analogue percussion sequencing and growling distortion before detroit-style chords and atmospherics move in to take you higher, before slamming you back into the dark groove once again. this one is a real bomb waiting to go off. for sub mission boom merchant combines forces once again with johnny kaos, and in keeping with the theme of the ep, the results are dark, distorted and full of flavor. the track roars through lashings of sub and relentless machine bleeps, drums and noises, jumping in and out of breakbeats with a monster reese bass chasing you down from start to finish. to round off the ep, acidulant does what he does best, stripping the original back to its bare elements, looping the vocal and creating a roland-heavy roller full of squelchy goodness. we see the future, and we are bringing it to you on wax. we hope these tracks put a smile on your face.

marcellus pittman s is back with his second ep of 2018 on his own unirhythm records. the jewel here is pittman s 2007 acidic masterpiece -there s somebody out there- getting the edit treatment from chicago s jamie 326, who whips the original into a hypnotic bender. -something like (a dream)- is an upbeat key-driven vocal house cut in pittman s flowing style with bits of vocals floating over the mix. -breathe beat- is a low key bouncer stripped down to the raw elements with floating synths hovering over a minimal shuffling beat

rekids regular markus suckut drops his third album entitled heaven is a state of mind this september. when not helming his own imprints, sckt and pattern research, the dusseldorf artist has been releasing on rekids since 2015 and is now a core member of the labels family. earlier this year saw the arrival of new life ep, a mesmerising release exemplary of the producer’s knack for making imaginative house and techno complete with a compelling groove. no stranger to the long player format having released two albums previously, markus suckut returns to radio slaves label with a quality nine-track album. from the word go suckuts album demonstrates his versatility as a musician, initiating with a beatless intro named escape, before breeze comes into play with its skipping percussion and loopy atmospherics. crunchy snares and crystalline synths make up suns out whilst future is not always bright drives forward with its sultry low-end, ethereal pads and sci-fi bleeps, leading into take a break and its medley of elaborate drums, living up to its name. above the clouds is comprised of intricate notes and soothing chords whilst the machinelike orchid features electro inspired melodies, contrasting to the albums title track, heaven is a state of mind, with its bumpy bass and warping textures. wonderland (version) is a ghostly acid cut which suitably closes the album

long time scene stalwart darren price is stepping out on brand new label, kilsha music, with a fantastic ep of monster house tracks arriving. opener charm offensive is a fantastic ten-minute trip into loose limbed techno. drums, bass and percussion all wrap and weave around each other and melt your mind in the process. a rasping lead synth eventually becomes the focal point as background chords bring real soul. the brilliantly bristling everybody jack (uw live maschine mix) is a full fat track with busy textured synths, sci-fi effects and old school jack vocals that will really work the dance floor into a lather. its dynamic and ever evolving, with plenty of tense peaks and troughs throughout to keep the floor on its toes. the final vinyl track is this is house music, a deeper cut with warm, warbling bass and a muted acid line spraying about the mix. it slowly builds the pressure in heady fashion and is one to really hypnotise.

mps is proud to be able to offer you xray xperiments vol 2 (xray 003) as a limited edition two disc set for the best reproduction and your listening pleasure. here s a quick breakdown of the tracks, why i like this record so much and a chance to hear it in full if unfamiliar: i first came across this 6 track ep in selecta-disc, northampton, it has been a treasured record in my collection ever since. on the original issue the most popular track, take no chance, was located last on the a side, the lowest sound quality part of any vinyl disc. later, presumably for dj s, a louder cut remix single of take no chance was issued. the track featured again on the compilation classic to the core but sourced from vinyl as aphrodite, who compiled the collection, did not know who made the music so they could not be found

a deep and melodic 4 track ep. mind stretch featuring a bubbling delayed synth with a resonating percussion pattern, a dark and beautiful house cut. low knee cutter a playful sub bass pulse, a dubbed and delayed loop obsession made for big room systems. estuaries a deep sub bass line and clear references to the dub techno tradition, features maltz on a piano solo on this hypnotic track. messin around you a textural journey with a deep drum foundation, a swirling combination blending samples from older works, fusing them into a new musical statement.

yasha is 28 year old joe gillick, who grew up immersed in the sounds of ukg & grime on the streets of south london. he founded orphan. in 2015 with his friends sage redman and billy meddleton. the three began throwing bi-monthly parties in deptford, their aim was to feature the unsung heroes, the seminal artists that weren’t often regulars in the crowded london club circuit. cutting his chops djing alongside the likes of tim goldsworthy (dfa, mo’ wax, unkle), dave okumu (the invisible, jessie ware), the golden filter (optimo), mica levi (micachu) and more, joe fed his keen sensibility for club grooves. cut to 2018 and joe finds himself a seattleite.

catch recordings return with their 13th release, this time from dj najaora. hes an emerging talent from the ever growing techno region in georgia who s mature, fully formed sound is showcased here across three innovative left-field techno & electro tracks. the excellent night dreamers takes the a1 spot. its an analogue electro cut throughout. with forceful broken drums accompanied by electric lead lines that provide a powerful energy for the dance floor. space call is a more cerebral and less dance floor affair that has you day dreaming amongst the meandering pads and classic detroit electro vibes. a soft acid line runs throughout, while the whole cuts creates nostalgia of old warp records last of all simulaq which takes the b-side has wide and vast rubber kicks alongside booming bass. making this side a merge of bass and electro. trippy stabs and dark energy pervades the whole thing, making it track for the late hours. while 13 is an unlucky number for some, this certainly doesn t seem to be the case for catch recordings.
